Join us in the Heart of the Davy Crockett National Forest for the 11th Annual Old Mill Music Festival. This musical event features some of the best in the business, highlighting roots music from several genres. Enjoy music, camping, eating, and a good fire under an East Texas sky. The old sawmill is the perfect backdrop for some good family fun.

“How to Pretend You’re a Mandolin Player with Your Dulcimer”
Stephen Seifert – A mountain dulcimer can fit the bill when the mandolin player‘s off asleep somewhere. I’ll not only show you how to play chop chords for backup in old-time keys, I’ll also show you how to do some nice tremolo as well as play tunes in the upper octave.

“Old-time Back-up Guitar”
Howard Rains. Howard will teach his approach to back-up guitar and will discuss his thoughts on the role of the guitar player in old-time music. Although his approach is rooted in the midwestern back-up style, it is applicable to backing up all styles of American fiddling. The boom-chuck, bass runs and chord choices will be discussed as well as how to listen for the fiddler’s style and how to make one’s playing fit within that style.

Tricia Spencer & Howard Rains.
Howard and Tricia will teach whatever tunes bubble up out of their vast repertoire of traditional American fiddle music. Old-style Texas, Midwestern, Appalachian, tunes out of archaic books, hornpipes, schottisches, waltzes… who knows? Bring a request. Tunes will go by quickly so have your instrument and a recording device.

Old-time Fiddle with Tricia Spencer
Tricia will teach her approach to old time fiddle built upon the shortcuts her grandma, Iona Spencer showed her when she was young. These are things every fiddler should know but maybe haven’t picked up along the way. This chord-based approach teaches seconding first and then how to find fiddle tunes in the shapes. All levels.

“Intro to the Dobro”
Gary Mortenson. The workshop will address the Dobro’s similarities to other string band instruments, as well as the unique qualities that set the Dobro apart. Topics discussed include, the basic tuning, Dobro hardware (picks and bars), left and right hand technique, playing behind different chord structures, melody playing, backing up singers, and playing fiddle tunes.

Stephen Seifert. I first heard this from the playing a Bruce Molsky & Big Hoedown one of my favorite old-time fiddlers. There’s so many different versions of this tune. I’ll share with you a solid way of playing it on the mountain dulcimer.
